I am not sure what kind of scratch we are talking about here, but you have to make sure that the scratch did not damage your device. It comes to my mind that maybe there was some friction between the shoe and the SPEED_CELL and that might be why the scratch appeared. Make sure that when you place the device in the slot the miCoach logo where the battery is located is facing outwards like in this video: http://vimeopro.com/micoach/welcome-to-micoach/video/32904917
