Hi All,

I realise that this is a typical noob question but I've trawled the site and haven't quite found the answer for my situation. So I thought I'd better ask people with a few more clues!

I'm currently training (just started) for my first marathon. The area where I live/train has a lot of short, sharp hills around it and when I run up one of these my heart rate is quickly elevated to the point where even a fast walk has me in the green zone and I need to walk fairly slowly to maintain blue. I'm torn between feeing that I should be running the whole session versus the belief that I should be listening to micoach. I don't feel pushed during my runs but nor do I think the zones are set too low (sessions on the spin bike have me working hard to get into the zones).

So in a nutshell, should I just walk where necessary, in order to stay in zone or am I better off just taking it easy when going uphill but not worrying too much about breaching the zones?

Thanks in advance,

Johno

  • Hi Johno78,

    thanks for posting.

The most important thing when training is to not overdo since I can see you are doing a steady progress. I can see how the hills can affect your zones since getting in the right zone when doing a heart-rate based workout can be quite difficult. I am not sure if you are a beginner or if you have already tried to run towards specific goals such as 5k or 10k, however if you are starting I would recommend  not do too much hill climbing and interval training but rather to focus on a flat route or a mixed one.

In the other hand, if you really think your zones are right for you then I would rather consider then to change your route or the type of coaching, maybe you will feel more comfortable with a pace-based training than with a heart-rate based one.

I would like to share with you the following link with a similar thread, there RocknRun15 and @fvri, one of our most active members of the miCoach community assess a question similar to yours: http://community-micoach.adidas.com/message/50830#50830

Also, any other tip from other members of the community is more than welcome .
