Been using the IPhone Connect and the Heart Rate Monitor. My work outs are in and around 700 Calories for about 60 minutes.

My BMR is around 2300 Calories a day...

For my Calories burned I would single minus 700 - 96 = 604 Calories.

Seems simple enough.

Now my question is this. When I wear the HRM monitor while sitting on the couch doing nothing, it shows that I burn 5 Calories a minute. If according to the HRM I am burning 5Cal/Minute should I not then be taking of 5x60 = 300 calories for the above mention work out for a total burn of 400?

Hope this makes sense. I am just trying to getting a better estimate of calories burned to better track my calories input/output.

Thanks,

Mike

  • I would ignore the 5 calories per minute.  I doubt the system is accurate enough, nor is it designed to gauge your resting calorie burn. Your BMR is not 3600 unless you're about 8 feet tall.

It seems to be reasonably accurate when I compare the calorie burn with that on a treadmill.  Over 55 minutes yesterday the treadmill gave me a reading of 778 and micoach was 816, about 5% accuracy.  You need to make sure you enter your weight in the micoach settings.

      • Hi bedpan,

        Thanks for the post.

MiCoach takes many things into account when delivering the caloric expenditure during and after a workout. Age, weight, height, gender along with Heart Rate and other factors are used to calculate this as accurate as possible.

As Steve Taylor said, please note that when doing activities where you are at least achieving your Blue Zone will give you an accurate assessment of your calorie burn.

        Thanks,
